Education | Musical Theatre Summer Intensive

The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive is designed for students who want to learn about the many elements of musical theatre. The objective of the Intensive is to build self-confidence through challenging, but attainable, performing arts activities. The population of the Intensive is divided into six groups that are age and ability related. Placement occurs based on a movement audition on the first day of the Intensive.

Approximately 20-24 students are accepted for each group (115 total students). The Summer Intensive is generally sold-out by April 1, so early registration is encouraged. The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive was begun by Ken Skrzesz in 1993 to serve students of Howard County, Maryland. Since then, more than 2,000 students have participated in the Intensive which remains active in Baltimore County, and now, Sussex County, Delaware.

  • Each student will learn movement and vocal parts and develop a character through acting work for four production numbers from the Broadway repertory - two numbers within their group and two numbers that include students from the entire Intensive.
  • The Intensive culminates in two performances of the 14 production numbers on the final Friday at 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive is taught by highly qualified performing artists, playwrights who are also arts educators.
  • Each group is assigned a leader who is a high-school or college student who has demonstrated talent and interest in a performance-related program.
  • Students receive information at a fast rate, on a daily basis, throughout the Intensive.  The information they receive allows them to participate in the final presentations with self-confidence and enthusiasm.  With this goal in mind, it is important to commit to allowing your child to attend each full day of the Intensive.
  • Each student receives two tickets to one performance of their choosing.  Other tickets may be purchased on a first-come basis.
  • Although tickets are provided to only one performance, students are expected to participate in both performances.

Policies

  • There is a low-tolerance policy for behavior issues during the Musical Theatre Summer Intensive.  The Intensive is intended for students who are interested and motivated to learn about the arts.  Most often, behavior is an issue for students who have not shown a willingness to participate but have been registered anyway.  Students with behavior problems that affect the learning and enjoyment of other students will be dismissed from the Intensive without a refund.
  • Refund schedule: Before April 1-100%; Before May 1 - 50%
After May 1-Refunds are at the discretion of the directors
  • MTSI follows the curriculum guidelines of the National Standards for Arts in Education.
  • Drop-off is at the door to the left of the main entrance on the circle.  Look for signs.  A parent must be present at registration on the first day.
  • Drop-off is no earlier than 8:45am and pick-up is no later than 4:20pm.  IF YOUR EMPLOYMENT DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO ADHERE TO THESE DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP TIMES, PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR THIS INTENSIVE.  THERE IS NO BEFORE OR AFTER-PROGRAM CARE.
  • Parents are encouraged to observe afternoon repertory sessions from 3:20-4:20 p.m.
  • Students should bring at least 2 substantial snacks (fruit and crackers, juice and cookies) and a substantial lunch.  Please try to avoid refined sugar in your food choices.
  • All students should bring a water bottle that can be refilled throughout the day.  PLEASE SEND WATER TO DRINK AND NOT ANY OTHER KIND OF DRINK.  STICKY LIQUIDS MAKE STICKY MESSES.
  • Students should dress in light-colored, but solid (no printing), t-shirt or tank top and shorts.  Shoes should be either jazz shoes or a light-weight tennis shoe (NO BLACK SOLES ON THE TENNIS SHOES) with cotton socks.  All long hair must be secured off the neck and away from the face.
  • Students are encouraged to bring some type of quiet activity (books, cards, art work) to use during breaks, lunch and quiet time.
  • All students must be picked up by 2:15 p.m. on the final performance day.
  • THERE IS NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEOGRAPHY AT THE FINAL PERFORMANCE.  Please attend an earlier rehearsal for “action” photos.  Professional photographs will be taken throughout the week and a professional DVD will be made available for a nominal fee.
