Education | Musical Theatre Summer Intensive

“[The] Arts Institute and Summer Intensive give my son the determination and confidence to succeed in all aspects of his life....” Angela E., Delaware

The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive is an exciting two-week experience for students who love to perform! Taught by professional educators and performers, it builds self-confidence through challenging, but attainable, age-appropriate performing arts activities and ends with a spectacular public performance.

Conveniently located in the resort town of Rehoboth Beach, DE, the Intensive not only offers a secure learning environment, but also the unique opportunity to combine a summer study program with a family vacation!

The Intensive, originally scheduled to be held at Cape Henlopen High, has been moved to Rehoboth Elementary School due to construction. There will be only one tuition price for the Young Artist and Pre-Professional Divisions – just $425.

Clear Space is accepting registrations for students in grades 1-12 and is offering the same great camp they’ve had since its inception, including high-quality instruction by arts education professionals, as well as age-appropriate vocal selections and production numbers surrounding a two-week concentrated study of Musical Theatre.

A Stage – Struck Celebration and Picnic will follow the intensive on Wednesday, July 1.  Summer Intensive students and their families will attend a fun-filled performance by the faculty and staff.

The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive was begun by Ken Skrzesz in 1993 to serve students of Howard County, Maryland. Since then, more than 2,000 students have participated in the Intensive which remains active in Baltimore County, and now, Sussex County, Delaware.

Procedures

  • Each student will learn movement and vocal parts and develop a character through acting work for four production numbers from the Broadway repertory.
  • The Intensive culminates in two performances on the final Thursday.
  • The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive is taught by highly qualified performing artists and playwrights who are also arts educators.
  • Each group is assigned a leader who is a high-school or college student who has demonstrated professional commitment, talent, and interest in a performance-related program.
  • Students receive information at a fast rate, on a daily basis, throughout the Intensive. The information they receive allows them to participate in the final presentations with self-confidence and enthusiasm. With this goal in mind, it is important to commit to allowing your child to attend each full day of the Intensive.
  • Each student receives two tickets to one performance of their choosing. Other tickets may be purchased on a first-come basis.
  • Although tickets are provided to only one performance, students are expected to participate in both performances.

Policies

  • There is a low-tolerance policy for behavior issues during the Musical Theatre Summer Intensive. The Intensive is intended for students who are interested and motivated to learn about the arts. Most often, behavior is an issue for students who have not shown a willingness to participate but have been registered anyway.  Students with behavior problems that affect the learning and enjoyment of other students will be dismissed from the Intensive without a refund.
  • Refund schedule: Before April 1-100%; Before May 1 - 50%
After May 1-Refunds are at the discretion of the directors
  • MTSI follows the curriculum guidelines of the National Standards for Arts in Education.
  • A parent must be present at registration on the first day.

  • Parents are encouraged to observe afternoon repertory sessions from 3:20-4:20 p.m.
  • Students should bring at least 2 substantial snacks (fruit and crackers, juice and cookies) and a substantial lunch. Please try to avoid refined sugar in your food choices.
  • All students should bring a water bottle that can be refilled throughout the day.  PLEASE SEND WATER TO DRINK AND NOT ANY OTHER KIND OF DRINK. STICKY LIQUIDS MAKE STICKY MESSES.
  • Students are encouraged to bring some type of quiet activity (books, cards, art work) to use during breaks, lunch and quiet time.
  • All students must be picked up by 2:15 p.m. on the final performance day.
